Media: Oil pastels on paper
My inspiration for this piece was obviously the movie. As a child, I grew up watching all forms of Disney channel and grew to love this movie. The movie portrays Pocahontas as a strong independent young Indian girl, but for some reason, this image of her spoke to me on a different level. This image I feel portrays her as a tad bit lost, I feel as she looks like she is wondering who she is and at the same time, she feels all put together. It's hard to explain but her character shows a bit of longing for something or someone, it shows depth to her character and that speaks to me because at the surface you may appear to be one thing but can feel completely different and alone on the inside.
The process I used for this project took a lot of patience. Oil pastels were hard for me only because of how messy the media is and it took a while for me to understand that and keep it moving. At first, I picked out my subject matter and drew my four sketches. Then I evaluated on which one I liked most based on, composition, angle, and viewpoint. Then I elaborated more on that sketch and practiced with the pastels, figuring out the layers for her skin tone and the way I was going to blend the background. Then I sketched it onto my final piece and started. I had to layer my colors to get the desired outcome and take my time on everything and like I said earlier patience was my biggest issue, blending and trying to make sure it wasn't messy.
